Mother of two and Co-founder of the boutique hotel specialists Mr and Mrs Smith, Tamara has visited thousands of hotels across the world over the last 10 years. In 2013, Smith & Family was launched offering parents a unique collection of child friendly hotels and family self-catering properties that are as suited to children as they are are to their parents. Tamara shares her favourite family holidays and the best way to keep your children occupied on those long haul flights!

Where is your favourite beach?

Aguas Blancas on the north side of Ibiza: I grew up there and have fond memories of days spent on this beach as a child. Watch out for the nudists!

What’s your idea of the perfect holiday?

Neither I nor my children are physically capable of sitting on a sun lounger for more than five minutes. We both need activities, something to wear us out.

Where was your first family holiday with your kids?

It was St Lucia – our son was two. He slept all the way there… but then woke us up early every day!

How do you keep looking chic on holiday?

My bottletop.org bag goes everywhere with me, my Lily and Lionel scarves (I’m addicted) keep me warm in the evenings and double up as a sarong in the day, and I spend money on good sunglasses.

What are your top tips for surviving a long haul flight with your kids?

Don’t rely on airline food for them: take your own – a constant selection of healthy snacks can keep them amused as well as fed. And, I buy new activity books for each journey so they are always interesting.

What do you always have in your hand luggage?

For the kids I always carry an iPad, snacks, baby wipes, tissues, sticker books, pens and crayons, sugarless sweets for take-off and landing, and an extra layer of clothing. For me, sunglasses and Dr Lipp lip balm.

What did you read on your last holiday?

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.

How do you keep the kids entertained on the beach when you want to sunbathe?

I’m not a sunbather – I’d rather be doing stuff! Last year in Bali we learnt to body surf; we always build a mega family sandcastle, too.

What are your beach bag must haves?

I always have an Evian face spritz – all that salty water makes your face so dry – a sun hat, sarong and UV-protection clothes for the kids.
